WIDO Logbook for Windows NT, 2000 and XP Version 1.3 from 01.03.2004 Copyright © Witold Domogala http://www.wido-software.de Email: domogalla at t-online.de --------------------------------------------- 'WIDO Logbook' consists of 2 programs: 1. LogbookService.exe 2. LogbookReports.exe REGISTRATION. WIDO Logbook is shareware and may be tested freely a month. Then it must be either registered (over www.shareit.com - search for Logbook) or deinstalled. Otherwise, LogbookService starts no more. After registration over www.shareit.com you have to send me the installation code (press button 'Registration' and you see it) and I will send you the code you need. INSTALLATION. The downloaded file widologb.zip must be unzipped into a temporary directory. In order to install LogbookService you have to start InstallService.cmd. In order to install LogbookReports you have to start Setup.exe. If your Windows needs a restart, you have to start Setup.exe manually again after restart. Note: LogbookService can be installed only by a user with administrator rights. FUNCTIONS. LogbookService.exe is installed as a 'local service'. This service checks the logins and logoffs of the users (and other accounts), and stores it in a log file, in brief 'logbook' mentioned. So that all logins and logoffs will be registered, the LogbookService must not be stopped. LogbookReports.exe is a 'normal' Windows program and it is to start from the start menu. LogbookReports.exe evaluates the 'logbook' led by the LogbookService and generates different reports for the duration of the user sessions, other accounts activities and the turn-on times of the computer (see Remark 1). The reports are showed in the default program for the text files (i.e. Notepad). For a better formatted view set the font for this program to 'Courier New' (or other fixed font). Remark 1: The LogbookService starts automatically every time the system starts. Therefore, a report for the account 'LogbookService' represents the turn-on times of the computer! Remark 2: Change of system time does not influence the correct recording of the duration of the sessions. Remark 3: Some of the system accounts (e.g. the account 'SYSTEM') are excluded of check. More-computers report. (of interest for big network administrators) --------------------------------------------- The program LogbookReports evaluates the file 'LogbookForReports.txt'. This file is usually created as a copy of the 'logbook' after pressing the button 'Get logbook ...'. The 'logbook' is %WINDIR%\LogbookService.log. However, you can also make a summary report for many computers at once: - combine the local logbooks from many computers into a one common file (e.g. copy f1+f2+f3 LogbookForReports.txt) - store the common file in the folder of the LogbookReports as LogbookForReports.txt - now start LogboogReports and make the desired reports - the button 'Get logfile ...' must not be used Changes in V1.3: ---------------- LogbookService: CPU and network usage reduced (now 0%). LogbookReports: no more run time error if entered date not correct. Changes in V1.3: ---------------- LogbookReports: Adjust for Windows with Terminal Server
